The Spread of Hellenistic Culture

Astronomy:
- Aristarchus of Samos discovered that the sun was at least 300 times larger than the earth
- he also proposed that the earthen other planets revolve around the sun
- Ptolemy placed earth at the center of the solar system
Mathematics:
- Archimedes accurately estimated the value of pi
Physics:
- Archimedes invented the Archimedes screw, a device that drew water from the ground
Philosophy:
- Stoics proposed that people should live in harmony with the will of god or the natural laws that God established to run the universe
- he preached that human desires, power, and wealth were dangerous and should be checked
- Epicurus taught that gods who had no interest in humans ruled the universe

2. I think that the greatest Hellenistic achievement would be the discovery that the sun is the center of the universe because this started what we know about the universe today.
3. When Alexandria would trade with different places, many different people from different cultures were staying in Alexandria with different goods from where they were from.
4. Euclid knew a lot about geometry so this helped with the measurements that they had to do for measuring the different things in the atmosphere.
5. Both taught about the gods and their beliefs.
