The Greek City States

Lo1: Define polis, acropolis, demos, monarchy, oligarchy, aristocracy, tyranny
Lo2: Compare the different models of government used in Ancient Greece
Lo3: Compare lifestyles in the two main city states Athens and Sparta

Lo1:
polis - a city state in ancient Greece
acropolis - a citadel or fortified part of an ancient Greek city, typically built on a hill
demos- the common people of an ancient Greece city state
monarchy - a form of government with a monarch at the head
oligarchy - a small group of people having control of a country, organization, or institution
aristocracy - a form of government in which power is held by the nobility
tyranny - cruel and oppressive form of rule

Lo2:
Monarchy - one single monarch or king/queen, usually involves one family
Aristocracy - a hereditary concept, statures based concept of your family by birth, owned land and passed it down through their family
Oligarchy - ruled by a small group, two or more people
Tyranny - tyrant, dictator

Lo3:
Assessment:
polis - a city state in Ancient Greece
acropolis - a citadel or fortified part of an Ancient Greek city, typically built on a hill
monarchy - a form of government with a monarch at the head
oligarchy - a small group of people having control of a country, organization, or institution
tyrant - a cruel and oppressive ruler
democracy - a system of government by a whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives
helot - a member of a class of serfs in ancient Sparta, intermediate in status between slaves and citizens
Phalanx - a body of troops or police officers standing or moving in close formation
Persian Wars - a series of conflicts the Achaemenid Empire and Greek city-states that started in 499 BC and last until 449 BC

2. I think that the building of a democracy was the most important event to happen for today's world because most governments today are democracies.

3. Oligarchy is different than Aristocracy because the people who are ruling in an Oligarchy may not be from the same family. In an Oligarchy there are more than one person ruling and in an Aristocracy there is only one person ruling.

5. Athens benefited from the victory of the Persian Wars because other societies were afraid to fight Athens in fear of defeat.

Reflection:
If I had to choose to live in Athens or Sparta I would choose Sparta because they gave more freedom to women. They also had a better army. Women were also educated in Sparta. If I could change one thing about Sparta I would make it so that it was a direct democracy because it would give the people more freedom with the decisions of their city-state.
